Going out on a limb

We all know the saying "out on a limb". Is it good or bad to be out on a limb? I have heard it is okay to climb the tree, but don't go out on a limb you may fall off. Or he was pretty far out on a limb when he predicted the future. Is it possible that in order to be successful in life you sometimes need to go out on a limb? I think so.
